  2. the Dominican order of monks 1563, but his
  3. sceptical attitude to Catholic doctrines
  4. forced him to flee Italy 1577. After visiting
  5. Geneva and Paris, he lived in England
  6. 1583-85, where he wrote some of his finest
  7. works. After returning to Europe, he was
  8. arrested by the Inquisition 1593 in Venice
  9. and burned at the stake for his adoption of
  10. Copernican astronomy and his heretical
  11. religious views.
